| Description: | Objectives: Promotion of pro-poor strategies that contribute to reducing the impact of the banana bacterial wilt, improving yield and quality of bananas and reducing pesticide hazards in forest agriculture systems. Background: In 2001, a banana bacterial wilt disease (hereafter referred to as the Banana Xanthomonas Wilt - BXW) was detected for the first time in central Uganda. The pathogen destroys banana fruit bunches and often results in total loss of yield, threatening the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on banana as a food and income source in the Great Lakes Region of Central Africa. Previously known only from Ensete in Ethiopia, in just three years since its discovery in central Uganda, the disease has developed into a full-blown epidemic, spreading throughout the eastern, central and north-western districts of the country. |
