Up-scaling sustainable clean seed yam production systems for small-scale growers in Nigeria
| Copy Link | |
| Coordinating organisation: | Natural Resources Institute |
| Description: | Objectives: Benefits for poor people generated by application of new knowledge on crop protection to annual and herbaceous crops in Forest Agriculture production systems. Background: Scarcity and expense of clean planting material (seed yams) is a major constraint to increasing yam production and productivity in West Africa. Traditional methods of seed yam production under low-input systems were found inadequate for supply of the large quantities required by farmers. The minisett technique was developed by NRCRI and IITA in the 1970s as a rapid means of multiplying yam germplasm, but it was shown that while 78.8% of the farmers in the eastern forest zone of Nigeria were aware of the technique, only 48.8% actually practised it. More recent experience from CPP-funded projects (R8278, R7503) indicates that uptake is even lower than this. |
