| Coordinating organisation: | NERA Economic Consulting |
| Description: | Objectives: To assess the impact of banana tariffs on Caribbean producers. Background: In the context of imminent reforms of the European trade regime for bananas, on the design of which the UK government wished to have an influence, NERA was commissioned to assess (i) the relative competitiveness of Caribbean Banana producers, (ii) the impact of the dollar zone on Caribbean banana production within the next decade; (iii) the impact of a higher tariff on European wholesale/retail prices; (iv) the market response of retailers and consumers in the EU and the UK; and (v) the impact on non-Caribbean ACP banana producers. Oxford Policy Management (OPM) was commissioned in parallel to NERA in order to assess the potential impacts of preference erosion in bananas on different Caribbean countries, options to manage these impacts, options for development assistance within current EU funding mechanisms. |
