| Copy Link | |
| Name (native language): | Utilisation de la matière organique pour améliorer la fertilité du sol dans la Région de Kinshasa |
| Coordinating organisation: | Department of Applied Analytical and Physical Chemistry |
| Description: | The city of Kinshasa (D.R. Congo) is relying heavily on vegetable production in urban and suburban horticultural areas for its food supply. Currently Kinshasa has about 1000 ha of these “gardens”, which are responsible for about 65% of the food supply of the city. Food supply from neighbouring cities has become problematic because of the bad conditions of the road. The soil in the region of Kinshasa is poor and sandy and the farmers do not have sufficient money to buy fertilisers. As a result the soil used for horticulture becomes poorer and poorer. The aim of this project to investigate to capacity of different types of organic matter to restore the soil fertility of urban and suburban horticultural areas in Kinshasa. Promotor: O. Van Cleemput and P. Boeckx (UGent). Other Belgian laboratories involved: Prof. Dr. Geert Baert (Hogeschool Gent). Local partners: Prof. Dr. Paul Mafuka Mbe-Mpie (Laboratoire de pédologie, UNIKIN)and Prof. Taba Kalulu Muzele (Laboratoire de chimie organique, UNIKIN). |
