Pastoralism (Cirad - URP)

Name (native language): Pastoralisme (Cirad URP)
Coordinating organisation: Environments and Societies Department (CIRAD)
Description: Pastoral systems provide a living for almost 20 million people in Sahelian Africa. However, land development through animal production is rarely recognized nowadays. If these systems are to be taken into account in future agricultural policies and resource exploitation is to be sustainable, it is crucial to introduce suitable production technologies and management methods and compile a stock of relevant scientific information so as to monitor change.
The unit, also known as the Dry Zone Pastoral Research Pole, is working on the one hand on the dynamics of pastoral systems and their degree of vulnerability, and on the other hand on the interactions between social and biological systems. It also analyses the organizational levels in pastoral societies and develops decision support tools to boost the capacities of basic communities. This should serve to promote traditional resource management methods, improve access to land ownership for animal production, and increase the contribution made by pastoral systems to national economies.
