| Name: | Aquaculture and Aquatic Resource Management (Cirad-UPR) |
| Name (native language): | Aquaculture et gestion des ressources aquatiques (Cirad-UPR) |
| Coordinating organisation: | Environments and Societies Department (CIRAD) |
| Description: | In the past ten years, aquacultural production, primarily in tropical regions, has increased by 10% per year, while fishing volumes have fallen. Tropical aquaculture therefore needs to produce more and better. The unit is concentrating on two research topics. The first, on the biology and genome of aquacultural species, aims to identify and manage worthwhile genetic resources, improve the performance of the strains identified and domesticate “new” species of aquacultural value. The other, on improving and ensuring the sustainability of aquacultural commodity chains and production systems, set out to support the development of fish farming in tropical countries through work on the factors that determine whether innovations are taken on board, zootechnical and socioeconomic references, and appropriate quality management methods. |
