Coconut Lethal Yellowing and Citrus Greening

Name (native language): Jaunissement mortel du cocotier et greening des agrumes (UPR)
Coordinating organisation: Biological Systems Department (CIRAD)
Description: Coconut lethal yellowing has destroyed numerous coconut plantations in the Caribbean, central America and Africa in the past twenty years. There are not currently any remedies against this type of decay with its complex aetiology, associated with several phytoplasma strains (small bacterium with no walls that cannot be cultured) and which, according to the first PCR studies carried out, shows a degree of genetic variability. There are still numerous questions about the identity, transmission and reservoirs of this type of disease, and the tolerance of some coconut varieties.
The unit’s work on molecular characterization of the phytoplasmas associated with these syndromes and on microsatellite studies of supposedly resistant or tolerant varieties is intended to provide answers to those questions. It is studying yellowing diseases in Ghana, Mozambique, Cuba and Jamaica: DNA extraction, ribosomal operon gene sequence amplification, cloning, sequencing and comparative analysis of sequences, and the search for other usable genes. It is also working on disease transmission and vector insects, in Ghana and central America.
