Agrobiodiversity in Savannah Environments (CIRAD-UPR)
| Copy Link | |
| Name (native language): | Agrobiodiversité des plantes de savanes (CIRAD-UPR) |
| Coordinating organisation: | Biological Systems Department (CIRAD) |
| Description: | In semi-arid regions where rainfed agriculture is practised, certain essential crops, such as sorghum, millet, fonio, groundnut and cowpea have always guaranteed food supplies and generated an income for farmers. Even now that these regions are faced with new constraints, related to both population growth and the environment, these plants are still the most likely to enable local agricultural development: their development potential and diversity are considerable and farmers are entirely familiar with the relevant cropping techniques. The unit’s aim in studying these crops is to satisfy the need for more productive cropping systems that respect their environment, preserve and make optimum use of local varietal resources and are capable of generating new markets. Its studies concern phenotypic and genetic diversity, participative breeding operations and genetic resource management by farmers, the efficiency of plant functioning and the identification of characters that could increase the potential uses of these crops. |
