Afforestation of tropical savannas in northern Brazil

| Description: | he project supports a Brazilian private company in Roraima (www.ouro-verde.com) in the large-scale afforestation of the tropical savannas with Acacia mangium Willd. The programme started in 1999. In particular, the following aspects are investigated: 1. Provenance selection. A total of 15 provenances are tested in terms of (i) survival rate, (ii) growth and yield, (iii) stem quality, (iv) timber quality, (v) natural resistance, and (vi) response to silvicultural treatment. 2. Growth and yield. Permanent monitoring plots are established to assess the overall performance of the species. 3. Silviculture. Production of high quality timber can only be assured through sound silvicultural practices. 4. Forest certification. Forest management shall consider adequately social, environmental, and economic aspects. |
