| Name (native language): | FOR 536 Matter fluxes in grasslands of Inner Mongolia as influenced by stocking rate (MAGIM) |
| Coordinating organisation: | Institute of soil science |
| Description: | Increasing stocking rate provoked extensive degradation of grasslands in Inner Mongolia accompanied by increased soil erosion and desertification. By now China is one of the countries facing the most serious desertification problems in the world. The total area affected by desertification is approximately 2.6 million km 2 , covering 27.3 % of total territory of China. Since grasslands represent one of the largest stocks for organic carbon, its degradation has a significant feedback on the biosphere-atmosphere exchange for carbon and nitrogen. Hence grassland degradation leads to volatilization and dislocation by erosion of huge amounts of C and N previously stored in this ecosystems. |
