GLOWA-Volta: Sustainable Water Use under Changing Land Use, Rainfall Reliability, and Water Demands in the Volta Basin

Coordinating organisation: Centre for Development Research
Description: The central objective of the proposed GLOWA project is the analysis of the physical and socio-economic determinants of the hydrological cycle, and based on this the development of a scientifically sound decision support system for the assessment, sustainable use and development of water resources in the Volta Basin. Integration of climatic, ecological and socio-economic factors and correlations with respect to the hydrologic cycle is the main scientific challenge.
The GLOWA Volta project applies a multi-disciplinary methodology. Early on in the project, new tools for interdisicplinary observations, data gathering, and modeling were developed in small teams consisting of scientists with different disciplinary backgrounds such as meteorology, hydrology, soil science, economy and law.
