| Description: | As a contracting party to the convention, Germany has undertaken to act on the goals set out in the convention. The Rio Convention underscores the need to understand the role of diversity in the functioning of ecosystems and on this basis to arrive at strategies for the conservation and sustainable use of diversity. In order to be able to deliver answers to a question that in the very real sense of the word is vital to humankind's survival, there is a need for a multiplicity of ideas, scientific approaches and participating disciplines. With its research program 'Biodiversity and Global Change' (BIOLOG) Germany has embraced the challenge set out by the convention. |
