| Description: | Plant biophysics is studied. The focus is on water relations and on the regulation of water flow in plants. To work out the basic mechanisms that govern water flow, we measure transport at the level of individual cells including the molecular level, tissues and organs, and at the level of entire plants. Most of the concepts used for a quantitative analysis of transport are derived from irreversible thermodynamics. They provide appropriate and useful tools to also integrate couplings between flows of water and nutrients as they move across a complex structure such as a plant. Results are summarized in physical and mathematical models which are tested experimentally. At the cell level, we are interested in the function (permeability, selectivity) of water channels (aquaporins) which provide most of the water flow across the membranes of living cells. |
