| Description: | The Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) of Cyprus was established in 1962 with a mandate to conduct research on plant and animal production problems, and develop, evaluate and adapt, under local conditions, scientific findings and technology available from international and regional research institutions. The ARI is divided into sevenresearch sections: Plant Improvement, Vegetables and Ornamentals, Fruit Trees and Viticulture, Animal Production, Soils, Water Use and Environment, Plant Protection, Agricultural Economics and Statistics. . At present the Institute employs 40 scientists, 65 technicians and a permanent labour force of 70 people strengthened by seasonal labour based on experimental needs. Twenty-seven scientists are PhD holders.The input of the ARI in the Euro-Mediterranean Region and in particular in the Middle East Region is also substantial. Most of the findings of the ARI are accepted and widely used in neighbouring and other countries. The ARI is a focus point in the region and scientists of the ARI are acting as consultants. |
