Description: The position is in the area of interfacial microbial ecology with focus on laser scanning microscopy. The research should concentrate on the structure and function of biofilm systems which are crucial for microbial processes in the environment. Major emphasis will be the in situ investigation of complex procaryotic and/or eucaryotic microbial communities at interfaces. For this purpose sample preparation, staining techniques, laser scanning microscopy with 1-photon and 2-photon excitation as well as 3-dimensional digital image analysis will be employed. The project may involve microcosm experiments at various dimensions. A solid background in basic light and epifluorescence microscopy would be of advantage.
