Description: Cassava is the second most important staple crop in Africa after maize. It is a major staple for more than 200 million people in Eastern and Central Africa (ECA) most of them living in rural areas. The crop has been prioritized by NEPAD as a ‘poverty fighter’. Cassava is seen to have potential to be transformed from a purely subsistence into a commercial crop providing raw materials to the food, feed, starch, ethanol and bio-fuel industries as has been achieved in other countries such as Brazil and Thailand. However, its production, utilization and realization of this potential is undermined by several factors, the most critical of which is lack of improved varieties resistant to endemic and emerging pests and diseases. Two diseases, Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD) and Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD) have over the last 15 and 5 years respectively been devastating cassava production in the sub-region. Other constraints include lack of appropriate frameworks for enhancing its value chains and for catalyzing its transformation into a commercial crop.
